ENHANCING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES OF WOMEN’S COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE TO STRENGTHEN THE REGIONAL ECONOMY

Sekayu, June 5, 2023 – In an effort to support the economic empowerment of Indonesian women in the palm oil communities, Yayasan CARE Peduli and PT Cargill Indonesia together with the Musi Banyuasin District Government, today holds a coordination and synchronization meeting for the Women’s Empowerment Program in Palm Oil Communities in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. At this meeting, Yayasan CARE Peduli and PT Cargill Indonesia distributed financial assistance to 13 Women’s Community Enterprise from 3 sub-districts, namely: Keluang, Sungai Lilin, dan Tungkal Jaya. The distribution of financial assistance was done symbolically by Drs. H. Apriyadi, M.Si., Pj. The District Head of the Regional Government of Musi Banyuasin Regency.

Drs. H. Apriyadi, M.Si., and Pj., the District Head of the Regional Government of Musi Banyuasin Regency, said, the Women’s Empowerment Program in Palm Oil Communities is a visible work by the Regional Government of Musi Banyuasin Regency in building resilient communities, especially women. It is expected that the financial assistance can support women entrepreneurs and empower their businesses, as well as contribute to the growth of Musi Banyuasin’s economy.

Since it was launched in November 2022, this program has gathered and provided support to a total of 945 women from 4 assisted Villages through a diverse range of program activities, including strengthening women’s institutional leadership and capacity, economic development, improving health and nutritional status, and mitigating risks to livelihoods.

An integral part of the program involved establishing the Women’s Community Enterprise which aim to bring together and empower women with various employment roles such as small farmers, farm workers, housewives who own small businesses or those who do not own a business and provided them access to financial assistance, increasing their understanding of business strategy, production processes, and marketing.

Budhi Bahroelim, Program and Advocacy Director of Yayasan CARE Peduli, stated “When women are empowered, they can reach their full potential and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth. Therefore, building the resilience of women’s businesses in the palm oil communities is crucial in the implementation of this program. We believe that by empowering women in the palm oil sector, will not only have a positive impact on their welfare and that of their familyies, but will also increase the productivity and competitiveness of the sector as a whole.”

The Women’s Empowerment Program in Palm Oil Communities in Musi Banyuasin Regency was designed with four main objectives. First, increasing women’s economic opportunities and family welfare. Second, increasing the capacity, voice, and leadership of women in the household and society. Third, improving the health and nutritional status of women and the community. Fourth, developing a holistic model of resilience and alternative livelihoods as part of the palm oil replanting program. This program aligns with and support the ongoing initiatives of the Regional Government of Musi Banyuasin Regency.

Yayasan CARE Peduli and PT Cargill Indonesia will implement a series of activities aimed at supporting the economic, social, and sustainability aspects with a primary focus on empowering women. This program will be implemented for 3 years and is intended to reach 144,215 people, out of which 69,923 are women. This program strives to increase the welfare and resilience of the community, especially women in the palm oil community in Musi Banyuasin Regency.

DISTRIBUTION OF 1,000 SCHOOL KIT PACKAGES TO 5 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN CIANJUR REGENCY

In collaboration with PMI Cianjur Regency, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) provided support for the early recovery program (Cianjur earthquake on 21 November 2022) by distributing 5,000School Kit Packages to 5 Elementary Schools: SDN Citamiang, SDN Salahuni, SDN Bunikasih 4, SLB AB Bina Asih, and SLB C Bina Asih.

The School Kit Package includes essential items such as school bags, uniforms, stationery, whistles, and keychains containing emergency contact numbers. The whistle serves as a self-rescue tool in the event of a disaster or when facing potential incidents of crime.

As part of this initiative, PMI Cianjur Regency volunteers conducted an earthquake evacuation simulation. Students, teachers, and school staff were educated about crucial measures to take during an earthquake, the importance to follow evacuation signs installed in the school, and the functionality of whistles and emergency contact numbers.

“We distributed school bags and educational supplies to students who were affected by the earthquake. We also equipped them with a specific equipment, making these bags not just for school purposes but for disaster preparedness as well,” said Ahmad Fikri, Chairman of PMI Cianjur Regency.

CONSTRUCTION OF TPS-3R AND WASTE BANK GROUPS

Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) is currently engaged in the construction of a Waste Management Site – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle (TPS-3R) in Ciagel Village, Kibin District, Serang Regency. This TPS-3R facility will serve 3 villages namely: Ciagel, Kibin, and Sukamaju. The primary objective of TPS-3R is to empower the community with a secure, sustainable, and climate change-resilient waste management solution. In addition, YCP extends its support to Community Self-Help Groups (KSM) in their waste management effort.

Yunus, Head of Ciagel Village, said that TPS-3R will optimize the existing waste management in the village. He is optimistic that TPS-3R will operate smoothly, especially in the Puri Tambak Gemilang Residential area, because the community already display a high level of awareness on the negative impacts of inadequate waste management.

Through the Climate-Resilient Community Based Water Supply and Waste Management (CFM) Program, YCP provides capital support of 2.4 million Rupiah to each village to develop a Waste Bank group business. The allocated funds are utilized to purchase supporting equipment such as garbage scales, garbage storage containers, and plastic bin.

Furthermore, the clean water facility, which was previously under construction, has commenced its operations. There is a total of 34 House Connections (SR) in the three villages. The ownership of all constructed clean water facilities and Refill Drinking Water Depots rests with the local Village Government. The management of these facilities is entrusted to the Drinking Water Supply Facility Management Group (KPSPAM).

THE VSLA PROGRAM HELPS MAK TUN IN HER BUSINESS

This is the story of Mrs. Jumiatun who is known by her nickname ‘Mak Tun’. Mak Tun from Bumi Kencana Village is a well-liked female figure in her village, known for her friendly demeanor and ability to be friends with everyone from diverse groups.

Mak Tun, a mother and grandmother, has been a member of the SIMPATI KENCANA Women’s Economic Business Group (KEUP) since the group was first established on 14 December 2022. As part of her membership, Mak Tun is able to do saving and loaning activities with the VSLA (Village Saving and Loans Association). The VSLA program at KEUP SIMPANI KENCANA is assisted by Yayasan CARE Peduli.

“Accessing loans from the SIMPATI KENCANA Women’s Economic Business Group (KUEP) is quite easy, providing additional capital for my family business venture which I am running with my children. We are doing online sales of household goods and traditional herbal medicine called empon-empon. Apart from access to loans, the availability of social funds can help us in times of crisis, such as natural disaster or health issues.”

PROSPER III – INTEGRATED UKS MODULE TRAINING OF TRAINER MASTER TRAINER

As part of the PROSPER program, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) organized the Integrated School Health Business Module (UKS) Master Trainer Training of Trainers (TOT) in two locations; Serang Regency on 10-12 April 2023, and in Bone Regency on 17-18 April 2023. The primary objective of this initiative was to educate participants on gender equality in the education sector and provide them with the knowledge and skills to implement the Community-Based Integrated Child Protection Mechanism (PATBM) and the UKS Module.

The TOT Master Training activities were attended by 15 participants in Serang Regency and 23 participants in Bone Regency. Among the attendees were representatives from various Regional Government Agencies (OPD), including the Office of Education, Health Service, Food Security and Agriculture, Environment Service, Community Empowerment Service, and Villages. This diverse participation demonstrates a shared commitment to achieving a common goal of enhancing the quality of education and health services in both locations.

Nursalam, Secretary of the Bone Education Office in his opening remarks stated that this activity supports the efforts of the Bone Regional Government to produce safe and healthy schools for students, especially at the Elementary School (SD) level.

PROSPER III – WORK PLAN PREPARATION AND BUDGETING OF UKS/M

On March 30, 2021, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) collaborated with the Bone Regency Government through PROSPER III program to facilitate the development of a work plan and budget for UKS/M (Integrated School Health Business) in Bone Regency.

H. Mursakin, the Head of Governance and Human Development at MULA in Mabuy Regency, mentioned that this activity included the recording of programs within the Regional Government Agencies (OPD) of the Bone Regency Government. The funding for this initiative was allocated from the Bone regional government development budget for 2023/2024.

The meeting was attended by OPD representatives from the District Regional Planning Agency, Education Office, Health Service, Environment Service, Women Empowerment and Child Protection Service, Food Security Service, Fisheries Service, and the Community Welfare Section who act as the implementer of the Bone Regency School Health Business Development Team (TP UKS).

PROSPER III- RAISING GENDER AWARENESS AMONG MEN’S GROUPS

Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) conducted a learning forum with men’s groups to raise gender awareness in Bumi Kencana Village and Sri Mulyo Village, Musi Banyuasin Regency. This activity aims to increase the understanding of community leaders and men’s groups regarding the gender gap and its negative impact on women, children and vulnerable groups.

This activity was held on 18-19 March 2023 with a total of 58 participants and aims to enhance public awareness in order to foster a gender-responsive culture within families, communities, and the government.

This collaborative learning forum was organized with the support from the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), led by the National Supervisory Board for Komnas Perempuan as the facilitator of this activity. In addition to sharing experiences, the facilitator uses the role-playing method to help participants increase their confidence in understanding and implementing good practices of gender justice, within families or households.

WOMEN’S VOICES CONTRIBUTE TO ACCELERATING THE STUNTING REDUCTION

As part of its innovative strategies to accelerate stunting reduction, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) is actively promoting gender equality and increasing women’s participation. This is achieved through various initiatives including trainings on Gender Equality, Gender-based Violence, and Women’s Leadership. The training was attended by 803 program participants – with 689 women and 106 men – from 3 sub-districts, namely: Sekongkang, Jereweh and Maluk sub-districts, West Sumbawa Regency (KSB).

The objective of these trainings is to improve the communication and leadership skills of women within their family, community and society to make decisions that contribute directly to the improvement of child health and protection.

The training is one of a series of capacity building activities from the “Stunting Reduction for a Resilient and Bright Future Generation” Program in West Sumbawa Regency.

PARENTING CLASS FOR ACCELERATINGSTUNTING REDUCTION

As one of a series of activities from the Stunting Acceleration Reduction Program in West Sumbawa Regency (KSB) and to motivate and support families with stunted children, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) has held Parenting Classes in March 2023 in Jereweh, Maluk and Sekongkang sub-districts.

Parenting Class is an activity to provide information regarding the provision of nutritious food according to the age of the child. In addition, the Parenting Class is a forum for education about maternal and child health as well as environmental health to ensure the continuity of the Provision of Supplementary Food (PMT) for Recovery for families with stunted children and pregnant women with Chronic Energy Deficiency (KEK).

Since the program was launched, 61 out of 198 stunted children in the target villages or 36% of children have been given a stunting-free status. This is a good result from a series of program activities, namely:

  1. Capacity strengthening of Family Assistance Team (TPK)
  2. Supplementary Feeding (PMT) for 90 days
  3. Parenting classes and gender training
