The Nutrition School Garden is a PROSPER II activity in an effort to provide alternative strategies for school communities to fulfill their nutrition. Through gardening activities, they can not only ensure nutritious intake but are also expected to have other effects on family finances by reducing some of their food expenditure.
In order to achieve this goal, PROSPER II held nutrition garden training in 10 PROSPER II partner schools in Serang and Bone Regencies with 31 female and 9 male participants. Participants has gained knowledge about the benefits, planting methods and ways to maintain or care for plants. In addition, participants received vegetable seeds to be developed at home or school, such as tomato, cayenne pepper, mustard greens, kale, spinach, and eggplant.
Even though it was held in different months, the results of the PROSPER II periodic monitoring indicated the success of this nutrition garden training. Some of the Serang participants revealed that they had harvested their gardens several times, and indirectly the results of the gardening succeeded in reducing their daily expenses. Meanwhile, participants in Bone Regency did not experience the harvest as experienced by Serang Regency participants, but additional material in the field of environmental management and waste management motivates schools to improve the quality of their school environment. With this positive progress, it is hoped that the goal of the nutrition garden to improve the nutrition of the school community and their families can be achieved.
